American history is full of court cases where state and federal law clash. Citizens of the United States tend to then get caught in the age-old battle of when we want to do something who do we ask Mom or Dad, where Mom represents state law and Dad represents federal law. Who will let us do what we want? What happens when Mom and Dad disagree? Who wins the disagreement and now are we in trouble? This course will explain some of the differences you will find between federal and state law, how to apply them to your clients, how to protect yourself as a CPA, and will evaluate a major case recently ruled on by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
This course is most beneficial to professionals new to the legal marijuana industry who may be at the staff or entry level in organization but also for a seasoned professional with limited exposure to this subject.
Upon successful completion of this course, the user should be able to:
differentiate between federal and state tax law concerning marijuana,
describe ethical considerations as it relates to a CPA's license,
explain the regulatory and legislative issues that also affect the marijuana industry, and
recognize case law as it pertains to the marijuana industry and the ramifications of not following federal law before state law.
