In this course, we will explore the unusual world of state tax laws, where local needs, regional pressures, and the political winds of change create a patchwork of taxes that constitute unexpected pitfalls for unwary tax professionals and their business clients. While we cannot cover every unique or quirky tax on every state's books, this course is designed to alert you to their presence, and help you avoid pitfalls in your practice. A brief discussion of the Supreme Court's South Dakota v. Wayfair decision is included. This basic level course is most beneficial to professionals new to state tax issues who may be at the staff or entry level in organization but also for a seasoned professional with limited exposure to this topic.
Upon successful completion of this course, the user should be able to:
identify various state level tax laws;
identify state tax laws within the context of the business or transaction creating the tax; and
recognize situations that may trigger state-level taxes.
