Form 1040 - Basic Principles and General Filing Requirements
This course serves as an introduction to the basic principles of federal income taxation of individual taxpayers and the general filing requirements of Form 1040, but it primarily discusses the determination of a taxpayer's filing status and the requirements for an individual to qualify as a dependent of another taxpayer for use in determining filing status, deductions, and credits. This course is updated to reflect legislative changes included in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) signed into law by the President on December 22, 2017.
Upon successful completion of this course, the user should be able to:
identify the basic filing requirements of Form 1040,
determine a taxpayer's filing status,
apply the requirements for an individual to qualify as a dependent of another taxpayer, and
properly report a child's interest and dividends on the parent's return.
