This course will provide the learner with information on how to avoid a payroll tax audit. Topics covered include; worker classification, tax consequences when an employee is improperly classified as an independent contractor, Section 530 relief, the Classification Settlement Program (CSP) and the Voluntary Classification Settlement Program (VCSP). In addition, the course covers what to expect during a payroll tax audit. This course is most beneficial to professionals new to employment tax who may be at the staff or entry level in organization but also for a seasoned professional with limited exposure to audits of employment tax.
NOTE: This course has been updated for the relevant 2018 provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and Bipartisan Budget Act, when and if applicable.
Upon successful completion of this course, the user should be able to:
determine how to properly classify workers,
calculate penalties for misclassified employees,
identify the remedies available to employers for improperly classified workers, and
identify common audit techniques used in employment tax audits.
